Regular care and maintenance can extend the life of your carpet. Whether your carpet is made from wool or synthetic fibre, the basic steps of carpet care involve frequent vacuuming, acting on spills immediately, and regular professional carpet cleaning.
The most important thing you can do to maintain the appearance of your carpet is vacuum it thoroughly on a regular basis, particularly in areas of high traffic. Vacuuming should be done at least weekly to remove soil and grit before it sinks below the surface.
At least three vacuum passes against the natural pile, with more passes over heavily soiled areas, are needed. It is recommended you use a quality vacuum cleaner fitted with a micro-filter to ensure fine particles are removed and use the correct brush setting for the pile length of your carpet. A vacuum with a rotating brush will agitate the pile loosening soil and other contaminants.
Spills and stains
Any spills should be attended to immediately and spot cleaned. Hot liquids should not be allowed to cool before attempting to remove. Solids such as jam should be scraped up with a knife or spoon; liquids should be blotted using paper towel or tissues.
Stain removal should then proceed according to the substance that has been spilt after first doing a spot test on a hidden piece of carpet or a carpet sample.
Take care not to scrub or rub a spill as this may drive the stain further into the pile and damage fibres. If the stain fails to respond to treatment, contact a professional carpet cleaner for advice.
When should you get Professional Carpet Cleaning?
It is recommended that carpets be professionally cleaned every 6 to 12 months to remove ground in and oily contaminants which can cause the colour to dull gradually and also harm carpet fibres.
Carpet, like all textile products, will change in appearance over time due to normal wear and tear. This can include vacuum cleaning marks, crushing from furniture, bleaching due to sunlight, wrinkling or rucking due to humidity, and soiling in high traffic areas.
Carpet can be protected by the use of door mats, furniture cups to alleviate pressure marks, chair pads and scatter rugs and these are especially recommended for high traffic areas.
Carpet care for woollen carpets
Maintaining wool carpets is easier than you might think. A natural product, the structure of wool means that soil and other contaminants are released more easily than with carpets made of synthetic fibre. Woollen carpets are also naturally resistant, which means you have more time to soak up liquid spills before they seep into the base and backing.
Most food and beverage stains on wool carpets can be treated with warm water applied to the affected area followed by 1 tsp of wool detergent and 1 tsp of white vinegar diluted in 1 litre of warm water.
This should be applied to the stain and then rinsed off with warm water until the stain is no longer noticeable, using cloth or towels to press the area until dry. A hair dryer can be used on a low heat setting to speed up the drying process and care should be taken not to walk on the treated carpet until fully dry.
Stains such as nail polish and rust require specific treatment. Dry spills such as soot may be removed with vacuuming alone. Some substances, such as soft drinks, may leave a sugar residue after removal and it is important to thoroughly rinse the area in such cases to avoid contaminants sticking to the spill residue. Any cleaning mixtures should also be thoroughly rinsed clear.
Caution should be used when using store bought cleaning products because if used incorrectly they can permanently discolour or damage carpet fibres.
They should always be tested on a carpet sample or inconspicuous area before use on spills or stains. If you are unsure about the best way to remove a stain or spill, contact a carpet cleaning professional.
